FAQS

Do You Have a Question For Me?

IS MY DOG TRYING TO DOMINATE ME?

No! The ‘pack leader theory’ has long been disproved. Dogs are not trying to be pack leader or show domination over us. They do things that benefit them in that moment.

IF I USE TREATS IN TRAINING WILL MY DOG JUST BE OBSESSED WITH FOOD AND ONLY LISTEN IF I HAVE FOOD ON ME?

All my training is reward based, which means we use lots of treats! We have to convince our dogs that what we are teaching them is worth there time. BUT we need to be careful how we train so that treats do not become part of the cue. The cue should be ‘sit’, dog sits and then a reward magically appears. Not ‘treat appears’ owner then says ‘sit’. That doesn’t mean we can’t show the dog we have a treat when we first train, there is just a way to do it.

IS CLICKER TRAINING USEFUL?

Yes!! I don’t use clicker training for everything but it can be such a useful tool for so much of our training. It helps in making sure treats don’t become part of the cue, it marks the exact behaviour we want and it helps speed up the training process. It is NOT a recall command. It is used to mark the behaviour we want. So many people use the clicker to gain a dogs attention... that is not the purpose of clicker training! That basically means the clicker is useless when we really need it.
